Orb MyCasting Data Trend Shows Media Consumption Becomes Increasingly Addictive When Users Control the Content
Active Orb Users Spend More than 90 Minutes Daily Using the Free Service
Emeryville, CA - Feb. 27, 2007 - Orb NetworksTM today released new user data revealing a growing trend that the more control consumers have over when, where and how they enjoy their own media, the more of it they consume. Orb findings show that the total amount of time people spend using the free MyCasting service to stream their personal digital media has increased to about 1 hour and 30 minutes per day - a dramatic increase from Orb's last release of usage data in August 2006. In addition, Orb also surpassed another milestone, logging more than 2 million hours of digital media streamed through the service.
"Orb is addictive because users create their own personal broadcasting system," said Joe Costello, chairman and CEO of Orb Networks. "People want the freedom to watch, listen or access their personal media content whenever, wherever and on the ‘screen' of their choice. When they have that kind of control, they are going to enjoy more of it. Our data just quantifies what we all know intuitively."
"Active Orb users now spend more than 90 minutes on Orb daily," said Costello. "When you consider that average Internet usage is 31 minutes a day, you start to appreciate how this new media freedom dramatically affects both media consumption, and how the Internet is being used."
Orb turns the home PC into a personal broadcasting system with its free MyCasting service, and lets users build and organize their own "channels" to enjoy their music, photos, video, TV, documents and other extras for viewing on any "screen" with a streaming media player and Internet connection including other PCs, laptops, mobile phones, PDAs, and the TV.
Orb Key Usage Findings:
- Daily average Orb usage climbs over time: Total daily consumption now surpasses 90 minutes a day with spikes at 100 minutes. This is a dramatic increase from August 2006, when daily consumption averaged 45 minutes daily.
- The amount of time Orb is to used to enjoy personal digital media goes up with time: over the past year average usage has doubled to more than 22 minutes per session.
- Usage of Orb surpasses 2 million hours: The equivalent of more than 218 years of digital streaming has gone through Orb MyCasting in the past 2 ½ years. On average, users in sum enjoy more than 230 days worth of digital media using Orb each day.
